Dining table. A pendant or chandelier should be about half to two-thirds the width of the table, hung thirty to thirty-six inches above the tabletop.
Kitchen island. Two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly, with at least six inches between each fixture and thirty inches above the counter.
Bedside. Wall sconces work best mounted so the bottom of the shade sits just above shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed, usually thirty to thirty-six inches above the mattress.
Entryway. Keep the lowest point of any fixture at least seven feet above the floor. In a two-storey entry, centre the fixture in the window so it reads from outside too.
Living room floor lamps. The bottom of the shade should sit at roughly eye level when seated, about forty to forty-two inches from the floor.
Ceiling height. For rooms over eight feet, add three inches of fixture drop for every additional foot of ceiling height.
